Plain definitions of the construction, action and maintenance vocabulary you will meet when buying and owning a fine grand or upright piano.

Action
The mechanical assembly that connects each key to its hammer and damper. A grand action relies on gravity to return the hammer and includes a repetition lever, while an upright action returns the hammer with a spring, which is the main reason the two forms feel different under the fingers.
Agraffe
A small brass fitting screwed into the plate through which the strings pass near the tuning pins. Agraffes fix the string spacing and define the speaking length of each string in the bass and tenor of most fine pianos.
Baby grand
The shortest class of grand piano, generally under about 5 feet 6 inches in length. It offers a true grand action but uses short, heavily wound bass strings that limit clarity in the lowest register.
Bridge
A curved strip of hardwood glued to the soundboard that carries the strings and transmits their vibration into the board. Most pianos have a long bridge for the plain-wire strings and a separate bass bridge for the wound strings.
Capo d'astro bar
A ridge cast into the plate that defines the speaking length of the treble strings in place of agraffes. Its shape and finish influence the clarity and sustain of the upper register.
Concert grand
The largest class of grand piano, typically close to nine feet in length, designed for concert halls and large rooms. Its long strings and large soundboard give it the widest dynamic range and the clearest bass of any piano.
Crown
The slight upward arch built into a soundboard so that it pushes back against the downward pressure of the strings. A board that has lost its crown sounds dull and short, and restoring crown is a major part of rebuilding.
Damper
A felt-covered block that rests on the strings and stops them from sounding. Pressing a key lifts its damper, and releasing the key or the sustain pedal lets it fall back. Damper timing is adjusted during regulation.
Double escapement
The repetition mechanism in a grand action that lets the hammer reset before the key has fully returned, permitting rapid repeated notes. It is the defining mechanical advantage of the grand over the upright.
Downbearing
The downward pressure the strings exert on the bridges and, through them, on the soundboard. Correct downbearing is essential for tone, and rebuilders measure and set it carefully when installing a new board or bridges.
Duplex scale
A design that leaves the short string segments beyond the bridge free to vibrate at pitches related to the speaking length, adding brightness and color to the treble. Some makers use it extensively and others dampen those segments with felt.
Fallboard
The hinged cover that folds down over the keys when the piano is not in use. On many fine pianos it closes slowly on a damped hinge to protect fingers and finish.
Hammer
A wooden molding covered in dense wool felt that strikes the strings when a key is played. The density, shape and hardness of the felt determine much of a piano's tone, and hammers are reshaped and voiced as they wear.
Humidity control system
A set of humidifying and dehumidifying components installed inside a piano, governed by a humidistat, that keeps the wood near a stable moisture level regardless of the room. It is a common recommendation for fine instruments in climates with strong seasonal swings.
Key dip
The distance a key travels from rest to the bottom of its stroke. It is set during regulation, and uneven or incorrect key dip makes the touch feel inconsistent and can compromise repetition.
Let-off
The point in the key stroke at which the hammer is released from the mechanism and travels freely toward the string. Let-off is set very close to the string on a well-regulated piano to allow control at soft dynamics without the hammer blocking against the string.
Pinblock
A thick block of laminated hardwood, hidden beneath the plate, into which the tuning pins are driven. The pinblock's grip on the pins determines how well a piano holds its tuning, and a failing pinblock is one of the costliest problems to correct.
Plate
The cast iron frame that bears the combined tension of the strings. It is bolted to the rim and pinblock, and its mass and stiffness keep the structure stable so that the soundboard, not the frame, does the vibrating.
Player system
A set of solenoids and electronics installed beneath the keybed that moves the keys and pedals to reproduce recorded or streamed performances. It can be installed at the factory or retrofitted, and it allows an acoustic piano to play by itself.
Rebuilding
The comprehensive restoration of an older piano, which may include a new or repaired soundboard, new bridges, a new pinblock, new strings and hammers and a rebuilt action. Rebuilding differs from refinishing, which addresses only the cabinet and finish.
Regulation
The adjustment of the action's many parts, including key dip, let-off, hammer distance, repetition springs and damper timing, so that every key responds evenly and reliably. Regulation is needed periodically as felts compress and wood moves.
Rim
The curved outer structure of a grand piano, built from many layers of hardwood bent and glued together. The rim supports the soundboard and plate, and its stiffness influences how much vibrational energy the soundboard keeps.
Scale design
The designer's set of decisions about string lengths, diameters, tensions, striking points and bridge placement. Scale design explains why two pianos of the same length can sound very different from each other.
Silent system
A mechanism that stops the hammers just before they reach the strings while optical or electronic sensors capture the key movement and send it to headphones. It allows an acoustic piano to be practiced without audible sound.
Sostenuto pedal
The middle pedal on most grand pianos, which sustains only the notes being held at the moment it is pressed while leaving later notes unaffected. On many uprights the middle pedal serves a different function, often a practice mute.
Soundboard
The large, thin panel of solid spruce beneath the strings of a grand or behind those of an upright that turns string vibration into sound. Its material, grain, crown and fit to the rim are central to a piano's tonal character.
Tuning pin
A steel pin, driven into the pinblock, around which one end of a string is wound. The technician turns these pins to tune the piano, and their tightness in the pinblock governs tuning stability.
Una corda
The left pedal on a grand piano, which shifts the entire action sideways so the hammers strike fewer strings or a softer part of the felt, changing the tone as well as the volume. On an upright the left pedal usually moves the hammers closer to the strings instead.
Upright piano
A piano in which the strings and soundboard stand vertically. The family runs from short spinets and consoles through studio uprights to professional uprights of roughly 48 inches and taller, the last of which approach a small grand in string length and soundboard area.
Voicing
The adjustment of tone by working on the hammer felt, usually by needling it to soften a harsh sound, filing it to restore shape, or hardening it to brighten a dull one. Voicing is distinct from tuning and from regulation.

Questions people ask

What is the real difference between a grand and an upright piano?

The strings and soundboard lie horizontally in a grand and vertically in an upright. That difference determines the action: a grand's hammers fall back by gravity and use a repetition lever for fast repeated notes, while an upright's hammers return by spring. Grands also open their lid toward the listener, whereas uprights project much of their sound into the wall behind them.

How large a room does a grand piano need?

Plan for the instrument's full length plus space for the bench and the pianist, room to raise the lid and clearance for a technician. A mid-size grand typically wants a room that can give up a substantial share of its floor, and a concert-scale instrument needs a large space with acoustic treatment to avoid overwhelming the room.

Why do longer pianos sound better in the bass?

Short bass strings must be wound heavily to reach pitch, and that weight makes their overtones sharpen relative to the fundamental, which muddies the sound. Longer strings can be thinner and more flexible, so their overtones align more closely and the bass sounds clearer and more focused.

How often should a high-end piano be tuned?

Most technicians recommend at least twice a year for a home instrument, roughly as the seasons change, and more often during a new piano's first year while the strings settle. Instruments in teaching studios or in rooms with variable humidity may need more frequent attention.

What is the difference between tuning, regulation and voicing?

Tuning adjusts the pitch of the strings. Regulation adjusts the mechanical parts of the action so the touch is even and reliable. Voicing adjusts the hammer felt to change the tone. A well-cared-for piano receives all three, tuning most often and regulation and voicing periodically as the instrument is used.

What humidity level should a piano room maintain?

Technicians typically recommend a relative humidity in the range of roughly 40 to 50 percent, held as steady as possible through the year. Stability matters more than the exact figure, because seasonal swings move the soundboard, drift the pitch and can eventually crack wood or loosen tuning pins.

Is a hand-built piano worth the premium over a factory piano?

It can be, for a pianist who values individuality and responsiveness at the extremes of dynamics, since small workshops fit and regulate each instrument by hand over a long period. Modern factories produce excellent, consistent instruments as well, so the honest test is to play both and judge the specific piano rather than the label.

Does a player system reduce the value of a fine acoustic piano?

It depends on the buyer. Some purchasers value the system and others prefer an unmodified action, so a player system may broaden or narrow the pool of interested buyers when the piano is sold. Factory-installed systems and well-documented retrofits by specialists generally hold up better than undocumented installations.

Should a restored vintage grand be considered instead of a new piano?

It can be a fine choice when the rebuilder is reputable and the work is documented in writing. A true rebuild replaces worn structural and action components, whereas refinishing only addresses the cabinet, and the two are priced very differently. An independent technician's inspection is essential before buying any restored instrument.

What should I bring to a showroom to evaluate a piano properly?

Bring music you know well that covers slow, fast and full-range playing, and play the same passages on every candidate. Listen for evenness across the registers, the quality of the sustain and the transition at the break, and test the touch with fast repeated notes and very quiet passages. Ask what preparation the dealer's technician has done.

Do high-end pianos hold their value?

Not in the way an investment does. New instruments lose value in the early years, and only well-maintained pianos from respected makers retain a strong share of their price over time. What a fine piano reliably offers is longevity: decades of playing and the option to rebuild rather than replace.

Can a technician fix a piano that sounds too harsh in my room?

Partly. A technician can soften the hammers through voicing, but a hard, reflective room with bare floors and walls will still make an instrument sound harsh. Rugs, curtains, upholstered furniture and bookshelves usually change the experience more than voicing alone, and a very large piano in a small room cannot be fully tamed.
