Dealers often quote a fine piano as a monthly figure, and that number can hide a lot: the sales tax, the delivery and setup, the length of the loan and the rate. A low payment stretched over eight years may cost thousands more in interest than a shorter plan on the same instrument, and a promotional rate can change after an introductory period.

This calculator starts from the piano's price, adds your state and local sales tax and any delivery or setup charge, subtracts your down payment and amortizes the balance at the rate and term you enter. It reports the amount financed, the level monthly payment, the total interest over the loan and the total you will have paid by the end. The math is the standard fixed-rate loan formula; it does not include fees, deferred-interest terms or rate changes, so check the dealer's contract for those.

How to use this tool

  1. Enter the negotiated piano price, your sales tax rate and the dealer's delivery and setup charge.
  2. Enter the down payment or trade-in credit, the APR the dealer or your bank offers, and the loan term in months.
  3. Compare the monthly payment with the total interest; then shorten the term or raise the down payment to see how much interest you save.

What the math assumes

  • The out-the-door price is the piano price plus sales tax on the piano price plus the delivery and setup charge; tax is not applied to delivery.
  • The loan is a standard fixed-rate, fully amortizing loan with equal monthly payments and no origination fees, prepayment penalties or deferred-interest clauses.
  • Interest is compounded monthly at the annual rate divided by twelve.
  • A down payment larger than the out-the-door price is capped at that price, so the amount financed is never negative.
  • Insurance, extended warranties and ongoing tuning are not part of the loan cost.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the total interest so much higher on a longer term?

Interest accrues on the outstanding balance every month, so a longer term keeps a larger balance outstanding for longer. The monthly payment falls, but the total paid rises.

What does the calculator not include?

Loan origination fees, promotional deferred-interest terms that charge back interest if the balance is not cleared in time, rate changes after an introductory period, and any insurance or warranty bundled into the contract.

Is dealer financing better than a personal loan or home equity line?

It depends on the rate and terms you are offered. Run each offer through this calculator with its own APR and term, and compare total interest rather than only the monthly figure.
